Home Birth

Most of my clients plan to give birth in the safety and privacy of their own home.

A circular issued by our governing body the Nursing and midwifery council gives guidance for mothers and midwives attending home births.  It states that “Research over the last couple of decades suggests that home  birth is at least as safe as hospital-based birth for healthy women with normal pregnancies.”

Women and their partners feel more empowered in their own environment, not restrained by hospital routines, policies and time limits.

Men particually enjoy the home birth experience as there is lots for them to do. For men who want to be fully involved, home birth provides the ideal environment. (see birth stories)

You can choose to give birth at home even if you are considered “high risk”. You cannot be forced to go into hospital.

Health professionals will sometimes tell you that you have to give birth in hospital and tell you the worst possible outcomes. Do your own research and come to your own decision about actual or potential risk factors. [See links and AIMS publication "Am I alowed" in my library]

There is not normally much mess at a home birth. It is easily contained especially if you have a waterbirth. I do stay after the birth to observe mother and baby’s wellbeing and will help to clear-up.

You can of course give birth in Hospital and I will support you and accompany you when you give birth.
